Question for the Ladies

Like the subject says, this question is for all the girls. I'm too lazy to make a friends filter, though, so the guys have to see it, too. (I'm also in a hurry since I have to leave in 30 minutes and I haven't even gotten in the shower yet. Evil internet.)

I need a suggestion for a long-lasting lipstick that won't completely dry my lips out or flake once it's been on for a while. Money's not a major concern; however, I don't care to spend $75-$100 on a tube, either. I've worn Clinique Different lipstick forever just because I like the color (Tenderheart) and texture so well, but I have to reapply it every 20 minutes or so, and even more often if I drink anything--so I usually just wear Carmex when I'm working.

Anyway, I've rambled on long enough. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks.

I'm back, so I can see friends-only posts and comment without signing my name. Maybe more, maybe not. I feel ill at ease; there's no longer comfort in it. So probably not.

I am really, really tempted to just delete this damn thing. I spent my entire life, until just a few years ago, being told that I was too uptight, too reserved. Now people bitch that I say too much. I ought to not care, because it's my journal and I can say what I want, but what's the point of talking if nobody wants to listen? If you think I'm talking about you, you're right; but you're not the only one.

You may be thinking that if so many people find things offensive, maybe I should listen to them. Well, y'know, that's what I've been saying all along. But when I say THAT, I just get told that those opinions shouldn't matter to me. I'm fucking sick of life. And no, I'm not overreacting; this is just a symptom of the larger problem. I don't understand at all how this should NOT hurt me.

I'm disabling comments because I don't want to hear it.

I've always liked Chris Rock. (Heh I just accidentally typed "Christ Rock." I wonder what that means...) He's one of my favorite comedians, and even one of my favorite celebrities. He's gotten a lot of attention lately, and I still think he's underrated. Every so often, I'll find out little things that make me like him even more. I read an interview with Gwyneth Paltrow in which she was talking about her latest movie (at the time), Shallow Hal. She said she joined a table of her friends and began bitching about how uncomfortable the fat suit was. She said that Chris jumped on her, talking about how difficult it is in America for fat people and how she was just making things worse with complaints like that. She went on to say that he's always been supportive of fat people. (In fact, I'm watching his latest show, and he just briefly mentioned how people are treated here as I was typing.)

Anyway, I liked this article about him that appeared in Slate. It talks about how Drudge is kinda stupid for disliking his politics, when really, he isn't putting forth the effort to understand what Rock is really saying. I meant to post it when I first saw it, but, well, I didn't.

I have a habit of thinking of the perfect thing to say--just a little too late. So, when I hear about someone saying the right thing at the right time, I get a kick out of it.

My cousin's mother-in-law got an obscene phone call. She answered the phone to exaggerated heavy breathing and moaning. Without hesitation, she said, "Have fun." Then she hung up.

I just got another advice columnist's reply. She said she didn't understand what my question was and that I should consider seeing a therapist. Uh...I mentioned twice that I was seeing a therapist, and my last paragraph began with, "My question is..." (After asking the question, I went on to mention--for the second time--that I'm already seeing a therapist.)

I'm thinking that Amy Dickinson of the Chicago Tribune might need to read a little more carefully before sending replies.
This weekend, I told Michael that if he'd watch a movie with me, he could pick it. (Yes, it does take that sort of bribing to get him to get off the computer and spend time with me.) He wanted to watch something scary, but movies don't generally scare me. In high school, I scoffed at Scream until my girlfriends finally convinced me to watch it. So we gathered at Amelia's house to watch the movie. Her mom, Stephanie, went out with a friend, so we had the house to ourselves. About halfway through the movie, the phone rang. The other girls shrieked and insisted that I answer it, so I picked up the phone. "Do you want to play a game?"

I responded, "Hi! Is this a friend of Amelia's or of Stephanie's?" My girlfriends were less than amused, but dammit, the movie wasn't scary.

Several years later, after reading and hearing 5 million positive reviews, I decided to rent The Ring. Not only was it not at all scary, it was annoying. What kind of stupid heroine doesn't know that animals--especially horses--are sensitive to supernatural presences? I learned that in elementary school, from a Sweet Valley Twins book! How could I possibly be scared by a story with such a stupid lead?

Anyway, Michael selected Wes Craven's They. He's been wanting me to watch it for a while, but I wasn't in the mood for another not-scary movie. This movie, however, freaked me the fuck OUT. I think it may have to do with the fact that I've always been entirely creeped out by night terrors, but at any rate, it terrified me. Like I needed help not sleeping!

That's all, for now. I think in this two-hour period, I'm making up for barely posting the last couple of days. I know you're all thrilled.

***Edit*** In light of my not being scared easily by movies, it's surprising what does scare me. Does anybody remember the "Seven Little Indians" episode of The Facts of Life where Stickle dreamed that Blair was killing everyone because they bought their shoes at the supermarket? I had nightmares for weeks after that aired. Of course, I was only eight at the time...

I think I've mentioned my cousin who went to Afghanistan and got married on his leave. To recap, the rest of family was less than thrilled; I say he's an adult in a very stressful (to say the least) situation and we should support him. Anyway...

I just found out that he and his wife just had their first big fight. To me this means that they had their first big fight. To the rest of the family, it's proof that they were right, that he made a terrible decision, that he should have listened to them.

Hey family: People fight. It happens. The man is going back for another tour (probably Iraq this time) in a month or so. Do you really want this to be the memory of you that he takes with him? He's a good-natured guy, but everyone has his or her limits. BACK. OFF.

Amy Alkon has already emailed me a response, and even recommended a couple of books for me to read. How cool is she? It may be that I'm so appreciative because she told me pretty much what I wanted to hear, but I think that's a pretty good reason. =Þ Actually, I think it's so helpful because she's always honest--sometimes brutally so. I don't believe she'd say anything she didn't mean.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a very deep person. If lyrics or literature are less than straightforward, I might not get everything I'm supposed to get. I do usually, however manage to get something. My question is this: does anyone get Sixteen Horsepower? I never even have a clue what the lyrics mean, yet I still love them and have for eight years now.

I've decided that it just doesn't get cooler than Bill Cosby. I'm watching Cosby, and Hilton (Cosby's character), in a fit of annoyance at Griffin, proclaimed that Griffin wouldn't move in with him and his wife, because they aren't Griffin's parents--and he doesn't "need any DNA test to prove that." I suspected there was more of a joke there, so I did a little research to validate. The episode aired in September 1997, just months after a young woman tried to blackmail him by claiming she was his daughter. He rules. There isn't anybody who rocks harder.

What's up with this dude on The Daily Show, trying to talk up Nebraska? I lived there for six months. It ain't all that.

I've had a bad headache all day. I just ate for the first time in 17 hours, and then watched Jon Stewart, and now my headache is getting better.
My husband and I were talking about something the other day, and I was trying to remember something from my life. My first--albeit brief--thought was to go to Google. To clarify a personal memory. That's a sign that I spend entirely too much time on the internet.

In other news, if you mix 1/2 a cup of melted peanut butter with brownie mix dough right before you bake it, it makes the brownies really yummy, and you can get even fatter, even faster.

She posted that he complained about not having anybody to talk to since January. So, he called some girl he used to be sort of interested in before the two of them started dating, and he's been talking to her. I can't decide how I feel about that. I should feel nothing, because it doesn't concern me, but it's never that easy.

I've spent the entire day raking leaves and washing dishes. I feel very accomplished, but nothing's finished yet. One day, I'll own my own house. The lawn will be astroturf and there won't be a tree, bush, or plant on the place. Or I'll have enough money for a gardner. You know, I don't give a damn if it's pretty; I just want it to look neat. It shouldn't take so much effort.

I need to make dinner, but I can't seem to make myself stand up.

Jemima Price (or Jemma, however she chooses to spell it that day) kicks all kinds of ass. If you like Tori Amos or Kate Bush, you'll like her. She even did amazing tributes to each of them with E-Clypse.

I have nothing. I'm just here to procrastinate.

It's been well over a year since my last effort to slog through it.

I just saw Andrew Dan-Jumbo finish lifting alone what it took two men to lift up to him. Gaaah.

I really think I may have an ear infection. My ears still hurt, and I'm so dizzy. It surprised me how much I liked it, considering that I hate children. Anyway, if you see a copy, pick it up. It's pretty good.

DEAR ABBY: I am 13 years old and I suffer from a condition where the person has a strong, persistent desire to have one or more limbs amputated. This happens every day, and I don't understand it, but I want to have my leg amputated.

I have researched prosthetics on the Internet and have found that life as an amputee is not that different. But I'm afraid if I tell my parents they will think I'm crazy. What should I do? Please answer this. It is ripping me apart. -- WANNABE AMPUTEE IN BERKELEY

DEAR WANNABE: The compulsion you have described is, I don't have to tell you, an unusual one. Please find the courage to tell your parents what is on your mind. Your parents may want you to explore this issue with a psychotherapist. Do not be afraid to do so; it does not mean you are "crazy." However, it would be extremely helpful for you to understand what is driving this "need."

Go here for the publication.

I understand that apotemnophilia does, in fact, exist. It should be taken as seriously as any other mental illness. What makes me think that this is a joke is the last sentence of the letter to Abby. That had to have been put there because someone else is as depraved as I am.

I have a really sick sense of humor.
